THURSDAY PUZZLE — I’m way ahead of you. I’ve already asked the editors what happened to the hearts, chocolate and flowers — Happy Valentine’s Day, by the way — and I was told that there were no Valentine’s Day-themed submissions this year. So if you want to submit a puzzle that has a very good chance of being published next year around this time, get to work on one of those.

If this crossword by John E. Bennett and Jeff Chen is a Valentine’s Day puzzle only in the sense that it is running on Valentine’s Day, then what is it? We’ll have to scramble to find out.

1A: The entry WIG is usually clued as a hair replacement, but it has been clued as “Flip (out)” or some such a few times. That’s definitely a fresher clue.

4A: “Dandy neckwear” does not mean that the neckwear itself is peachy keen. It hints at neckwear worn by a dandy, which might be an ASCOT.

13A: Even if you are not an opera aficionado (I am not, and am also terrible with names), even if you don’t speak Italian (I do not), this is possible to figure out. The clue is “Opera that famously ends with the line ‘La commedia è finita!’" The word “commedia” tells me that it is, at the very least, a comic opera, but I suspect it goes further than that. I suspect it has to do with a clown. A sad clown, which is why the end is formally announced. In my experience, a formally announced ending in the arts usually means that someone dies. And it turns out that I was right: The opera is “I PAGLIACCI,” by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Also, the crossings were kind.

54A: You don’t have to remember the NASH to know this one, and it was a delightful tidibit of information to learn. Fortunately, the crossings on this one were easy, so work them and find out which car first offered seatbelts in 1950.

12D: “Blind spot?” doesn’t refer to the television show on which the constructor David Kwong is a producer and consultant. This clue refers to a spot on or part of the blinds that hang in a window called a SLAT.

My first run through this puzzle made me concerned for Mr. Bennett’s and Mr. Chen’s welfare, because I could have sworn that this purported Valentine’s Day theme had to do with signs that are posted in the bathroom. That seemed odd, even if you are not a romantic at heart, and the lesson I took away from it is that I should always read the revealer clue very carefully. And more than once.

I knew the theme clues were anagrams because of the way they “sounded” to my ears (don’t ask; I’m a savant in that way), but I was still working with the theory that they were bathroom signs. That was fine when I got to NOTED TENOR for DO NOT ENTER, but it took a weird turn when I got to SPEED LIMIT, the answer to SIMPLE DIET. Maybe it’s a men’s room thing.

It turns out that the only thing the revealer had to do with the bathroom is that sometimes we will see an OUT OF ORDER SIGN in the loo. That’s all well and good, but what are the all-caps theme clues all about?

The answer is that we were supposed to anagram those all-cap theme clues to get a series of road SIGNs, whose letters are OUT OF ORDER. Get it?

Jeff Chen: Jeb and I apparently have much more juvenile taste than Will. Our submitted anagrams:

  DONE ROTTEN

  TEPID SLIME

  GREASED PET

  DECAL ODORS

Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.

Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
